Inception (2010) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 49) 💭

Image
Hello everyone, The penultimate film in this project is a doozy. It just celebrated its 10th anniversary and many regard it as one of Christopher Nolan's greatest successes. When it first came out, I didn't think I had the mental capacity to be able to handle it. People said it was crazy confusing and that scared me. But now that I've grown up a little more and expanded my film horizons, I thought I would be ready to jump into this world and experience what everyone has been raving about for so long.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 48) 💫

Image
Hello everyone, As I am coming to the end of this project, I thought I would throw in a really fun one. I think a lot of people were really surprised by how good the first Lego Movie was, and then subsequent spin-offs like Lego Batman and Lego Ninjago also tickled people's fancies. This franchise has such a wacky charm, and I hadn't got around to finally watching the sequel to determine whether everything is still awesome.... Diving back into a successful world means you have the usual expectations dialled up to 50. There’s further to fall if the sequel suc...

Dumbo (2019) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 47) 🐘

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film is a journey of my own curiosity. I have made it a rule for this project not to re-watch films I have already seen, but this will end up being one of the exceptions to that rule. I saw this film when it came out and actually really loved it. But I don't remember much of the detail as to why. In my general research around film review and binging review content in both podcast and video format, I found someone who shall remain nameless who had a long list of reasons why this film was rubbish. So I decided to revisit this film from an analytical point of view to see once and for all whether I agree with their sentiments.... Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 46) 🐼

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film was another one of those animated feature franchises which added another installment after a point where I thought the franchise was done or had really stopped caring about it. I remember how much I loved the first and second Kung Fu Panda movies, but I wasn't really fussed about this one when it first came out. With the time, I finally got around to checking it off my list once and for all.... Unlike that same animal/adventure franchise, the 2011 sequel and this film’s predecessor was widely regarded to be good enough to warrant the f...

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 45) 🎄

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film was a family Disney treat that slipped through the cracks for me when it first came out. I'm probably one of few people in the world who isn't a huge fan of The Nutcracker story, so I wasn't particularly excited about an adaptation of that; however the idea of Morgan Freeman, Dame Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley playing dress-up did intrigue me. So in my free time, I had a chance to watch it and it was fine. Not great, not terrible; just fine.... Shutter Island (2010) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 44) 🌀

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film is a form of semi-retraction to something I've written and published previously. A couple of weeks ago I was writing about directors who weren't for me, and I name dropped Martin Scorsese because his 2016 film Silence disappointed me to the point of an 1100 word rant/thesis. Then I stumbled across another one of his films starring Leonardo DiCaprio and thought I would give him one last shot to disappoint me. But I was completely shocked by how much I loved this film, and I think I might have to retract my previous statement and refine: Scorsese is just OK. Not completely for me, but OK. He has the intrigue of this one to thank for my slight change of heart.... The Devil All The Time (2020) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 43) ⛪

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film was one of few times I have ever been sucked into watching a film simply off its trailer. Netflix like to dump trailers out for all their content all the time, and this one just happened to come up in my Recommended on YouTube. I was utterly intrigued by the trailer and the concept, and got 100% sucked into watching the film. It was a journey and I have complex feelings about it, but I think this experience goes to show when you do a inventive but not spoiler-tastic trailer, you can surprise people.... I Am Woman (2020) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 42) 👩

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film wasn't one I was initially going to talk about as part of this project; I was just going to watch it while I was knitting or doing one of my permanent marker colouring-in patterns. But then I actually watched it and I was surprised by how much it struck me. It affected me in the same way the passing of legendary justice and women's advocate Ruth Bader Ginsburg has struck me in the last few days; because it got me thinking about all the wonderful women both past and present who have stood up and used their voices to inspire and create real change and empower women all over the world. These incredible women need to be celebrated and their legacies respected to the highest degree, and documentaries and films like this one go a long way in support of that.... Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 41) 🚀

Image
Hello everyone, Today's post ends Star Wars Week with one of the more recent additions to the feature film collection. The origin story of everyone's favourite smuggler had a lot of production issues behind the scenes, but what eventually got released was a big ball of nostalgic fun.... A solidly likeable and visually lively offering directed by the experienced hands of Ron Howard, it brought the fun and the funny that defined the loveable smuggler in the franchise. Within a galaxy obsessed with coaxium or rare hyperfuel, street rat dreamer Han Solo (Alden Ehrenrei...

Star Wars - Skywalker Saga Ranking Part 3 - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 40) ✨

Image
Hello everyone, Today is the third and final installment of my Star Wars ranking. I've realised that I forgot to mention I've already published some thoughts on the sequel movies on here, which you can read here  if you are interested in some more general ideas. For this top three, it's probably going to be controversial but these are also the ones I have the most personal connection to. I know and fully understand that Star Wars aren't the most amazing or high-brow films ever made, but it's fun to get lost in the absurdity for a while and watch people fight each other with lightsabers. I have a soft spot for them and always will, even with all their issues both on and off-screen.... Star Wars - Skywalker Saga Ranking Part 2 - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 39) 🌟

Image
Hello everyone, Today I'm continuing with my Star Wars ranking. The middle three were almost the hardest to write about because I had to balance how I felt about them and consequently why some choices might be controversial with the objective merits of each film. For me, it's really easy to rip into something you viscerally don't like or don't connect with, and conversely it's really easy to rave about something you love and list the strengths. It's harder when your feelings aren't so black and white, so I hope I was able to get that right with this section.... I’m not out here trying to say that the order in which I have ranked th...
