Funky Friday - Katy Perry's Witness Winners
Hi there Internet!
I hope y'all are doing well wherever you are 😁 I am pleased to report that my cold has finally decided to vacate my body and I am well on the way to being 100% once again - hallelujah!
This also means that my brain is now in a place where I can start writing some pretty interesting and cool stuff to post on here. There are some ideas that I have been sitting on for a while that I am super excited to finally get out into the world so I hope that y'all decide to stick around into the future 💖
Last post I did say that I would be posting on here twice a week for the next little while. My original intention was for Wednesdays and Sundays to be blog days. But as you've probably figured out, this hasn't happened this week 😔.
I happened to have a lot of plans come up in the past couple of days, so I haven't had time to sit down and write. But I have had a very lazy Friday, so it is finally blog time!
I'm also planning on posting something thematic and reflective on Sunday, so look out for that if that sounds interesting to you 💡
But onto the topic of today's blog post - breaking down Katy Perry's new album 'Witness'. I've wanted to do this ever since it dropped on the 9th June, and I'm excited to let y'all know how I feel about Perry's 5th studio release.
So without further ado, here is Katy Perry's Witness Winners for your funky Friday night....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Katy Perry is arguably one of the biggest pop stars in the world. After the release of Prism all the way back in 2013 and concluding her epic Prismatic World Tour in late 2015, she went on hiatus to refresh and rejuvenate herself. Throughout the majority of 2016, Perry undertook a songwriting and recording process that would eventually produce a new musical direction and a new album - Witness.
Not wanting to rush her latest musical endeavour, Perry has talked about experimenting with a variety of different styles and collaborators to create a sound that connects with people in an inspiring and relatable way. She has described this new direction as "purposeful pop" in a number of interviews.
For Witness, Perry has jumped on the electropop train whilst also incorporating a series of diverse musical devices. In a number of tracks, she has swapped big catchy hooks for groovy understated tones and atmospheres that have roots in 90s house music, EDM, electro-hiphop and 80s new wave.
Witness has received mixed reviews from critics, and I think this is largely because the album is a very distinct detour from Perry's usual sound. It has a very different character to the likes of Teenage Dream and Prism, but unfortunately a number of the tracks feel more like fillers than chart toppers.
Having said that, I don't want to focus on the things I don't like about this album, because there is a lot to like about Perry's newest musical offering. It is just a matter of looking at it in a different way.
Looking beyond its potential for commercial success, Witness is arguably some of the most raw material Perry has ever released. Honesty is the album's strongest feature, with themes of liberation, empowerment and truth shining through.
After listening to Witness multiple times, here are a few of the strongest songs that really resonated with me:
The opening track that gave the album its name, 'Witness' is a really good representation of Perry's new musical direction. It's a mid-tempo, electronic pop song which relies on a 1990s house piano. With a surprisingly catchy beat, super relatable lyrics and a sweet whistle line at the end, it feels really positive and has a great energy about it.
This song has a similar feel to 'Witness' in the sense that it has a great positive message. As a self-reflective anthem which talks about finding one's purpose in life, I feel like it is incredibly underrated. Although the instrumentation is slightly forgettable, the lyrics are so strong and powerful in terms of maintaining a sense of perspective that it certainly stands out in my mind.
I find this track intriguing as a love song because it doesn't feel like a story I've heard before. Lyrically, Perry talks about things that are constant reminders of time spent in a previous relationship and it's relatable perspective that I find refreshing and heartbreaking at the same time. Its strong metaphors and especially vulnerable vocal delivery reflect the raw and honest tone of the album.
Katy Perry continues to evolve and grow as an artist with every piece of music she releases, and her fifth studio album is no exception.
She's never afraid to be different and take risks, and I can respect that regardless of whether I like the end product or not.
Although I am not completely in love with the entire album, there are certain moments on Witness that do showcase exactly why Perry is one of the most successful pop stars on the planet. They are awesome musical moments and that's why they are on repeat in my playlist.
So the moral of this review is to always look for the positives in life, because let's face it: I don't want an army of Katy Perry fans attacking me on the Internet. Let's spread the musical love people 🎶
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So there you go, I hope you enjoyed my thoughts on 'Witness'. I didn't want to write a formal review because I am a tad lazy, but if you think someone else could find it enjoyable please share and recommend to friends 😃

Witness
Bigger Than Me
This song has a similar feel to 'Witness' in the sense that it has a great positive message. As a self-reflective anthem which talks about finding one's purpose in life, I feel like it is incredibly underrated. Although the instrumentation is slightly forgettable, the lyrics are so strong and powerful in terms of maintaining a sense of perspective that it certainly stands out in my mind.
Miss You More
I find this track intriguing as a love song because it doesn't feel like a story I've heard before. Lyrically, Perry talks about things that are constant reminders of time spent in a previous relationship and it's relatable perspective that I find refreshing and heartbreaking at the same time. Its strong metaphors and especially vulnerable vocal delivery reflect the raw and honest tone of the album.
Chained To The Rhythm
The album's lead single and probably my favourite high energy song from Witness, Perry dabbles in more politically charged lyrical themes whilst keeping it catchy and fun. In my opinion, this is the most accurate representation of "purposeful pop" on the album and includes some clever word play that subtlely makes listeners think about the world around us.
Save As Draft
This song is Perry's strongest lyrical performance on Witness, packing a punch towards the end of the track list. Opening with eerie typing sounds, it's an emotionally intense ballad that has both complexity and passion. With an incredibly relatable story about wanting to say things to someone but ultimately not following through, it's raw, honest and powerful - what's not to love?
