Green Book (2018) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 10) 🚗

Image
Hello everyone, Today's post places the spotlight on a Best Picture Academy Award winner. Controversial at the time, I didn't have much of an opinion because I wasn't able to watch the film. Now that I've seen it, you'll see what side of the fence I ended up on.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB Witty and scenic; this story of an Italian-American bouncer taking on the role of driver for a talented African-American musician as he tours the South won Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards. Was this the right call? No. But is Green Book still a good film with heart and merit? Absolutely. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali give magnetic performances in the leading roles of family man with a tough exterior Tony Lip an...

Joker (2019) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 9) 🃏

Image
Hello everyone, Today's post is not the kindest I have ever been in a review. It came from a very personal place of frustration with what I saw, which I have to say is very rare. I don't like being a negative Nancy, but honesty is important to me so here we are. I also couldn't filter enough thoughts out, so forgive me for this one also being a touch on the lengthy side.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB The next in a long line of adaptations on the troubled streets of Gotham City, director and co-writer Todd Phillips has taken on the ginormous task of The Joker’s origin story, with horrifically muddled results. Much like the characterisation of the protagonist who eventually becomes one of the most infamous comic-book vill...

Ocean's Twelve (2004) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 8) 💰

Image
Hello everyone, Today's post is actually one of the films that inspired this film in the first place. The Ocean's trilogy was one of those older franchises that was missing from my viewing resume, and lockdown gave me a chance to catch-up on some of those along with some other wacky and weird choices. I'm not super happy with the review, but then again that's probably fitting - I wasn't super stoked with the film either.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB There’s no denying that Ocean’s 11 (2001) is a tough act to follow. But Steven Soderbergh stepped up to the plate with a lukewarm sequel that unfortunately missed the mark in several areas. It’s predecessor gained its charm from how focused and compact the narrative ...

The Half of It (2020) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 7) 💞

Image
Hello everyone, Today's review is about one of my favourite YA films I've ever seen. If you haven't already, please give this film a try - it's something really special 😍.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB Beautifully intelligent, warm and passionately complex, Alice Wu’s The Half of It wears its raw emotions on its sleeve and upends expectations in a captivating emotional rollercoaster. The story of a shy and hard-working introvert who agrees to help a kind-hearted jock write love letters to woo the pastor’s daughter, even though they both have a crush on her; the wide conceptual scope beyond just a linear love story adds complexity and depth to its overall impact. As clique as it sounds, this is thankfully not a ‘t...

Yesterday (2019) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 6) 🎸

Image
Hello everyone, Today's review was another film I was excited to catch up on, and was kind of disappointed with things by the end. I hate it when a film makes me feel like that, but I hope my thoughts do my conflicted thoughts justice.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB A curious alternate reality musical combo and a love letter to the hits of The Beatles, Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis have created a heartfelt story with only surface level pizzazz and shine. Struggling singer Jack (Himesh Patel) is poised to give up his dreams of fame, before a freak electricity vortex erases certain pop culture from the world and allows Jack to repurpose some classic tunes. His rollercoaster rise to fame Director Boyle (a la Slumdog Millionaire )...

Ophelia (2018) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 5) 🎭

Image
Hello everyone, To round out Week 1 of this fun new project I am thoroughly enjoying writing (I'm giving myself weekends off - hope that's cool with y'all 😎), we have a personal doozy. I'm not usually one who has enough patience to read the book before I watch the movie, but Ophelia was one where I actually cared about that order. I made sure to read the book first, and boy am I glad I did. As you'll hopefully get from the following thoughts, the film had some surprises for my book-loving heart.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid!  Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk.  Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB A tale of great potential and missed opportunities, Ophelia is beautifully convoluted. Not even solid performances from an all-star cast and an especially fabulous leading effort from Dai...

Logan Lucky (2017) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 4) 🏁

Image
Hello everyone, Today's review was one of the more difficult ones to get right. The more definitively I feel about a film, the easier it is to write about it. This process gets super tricky when I don't necessarily know how I feel about a film straight away, or the viewing experience leaves me incredibly confused or undecided. So I'm pretty proud of how this one turned out 😁. Here's some thoughts about a heist in America's deep South, start those engines....
