Coco (2017) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 23) 👪

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film is an animated feature that kind of went under the radar when it came out. I completely missed it, but heard amazing things from other people who had seen it and figured I should probably check it out. I think Coco is one of Disney's greatest triumphs, and I would 110% recommend it if you haven't already experienced its brilliance.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB An evocative and captivating family journey over time and spirit worlds, this film was another of Disney’s musical masterpieces. Coco followed the story of young Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) who dreamed of becoming a famous musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt); despite his family’s generations old ban on music. In o...

Moonlight (2016) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 22) 🌑

Hello everyone, Today's film is infamous for an incredibly unfortunate reason. The actual winner of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Picture (NOT La La Land, remember that debacle??!!), anyone who has experienced this film will probably recollect it as one of the most profoundly moving pieces of cinema ever. A big statement I know, but one I stand behind. It's heavy, yet so fundamentally brilliant.... Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB It’s incredibly frustrating that people would most likely remember Barry Jenkins’ 2016 masterpiece for initially losing the Academy Award for Best Picture in the infamous card mix-up. Moonlight won the top prize, and deservedly so because there are few pieces of cinema that enthrall audiences like thi...

Brooklyn (2015) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 21) 🌺

Hello everyone, Today's film is a wholesome and moving love story that truly wedged its way into my soul. It was so beautiful, and so touching, and I am once again frustrated that I did not discover its magic sooner. A gem that continued my love affair with the talent and charms of Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson, please give this one a watch if you haven't already.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB A beautiful and sincere journey of romance, discovery and grief, this John Crowley period drama definitely deserved its place amongst the Best Picture nominees at the 2016 Academy Awards. Irish girl Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) emigrates to the plentiful streets of New York in the 1950s, quickly falling in love with local Italian ...

Paddington (2014) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 20) 🍯

Hello everyone, Today's film was simply too much fun. Tooth rotting sweetness and the absolute cutest! I'm annoyed it took me 6 years to experience the joy that is a movie about everyone's favourite bear in a blue toggle-button raincoat.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB Fun, warm and full of charming British soul for the whole family, the infamous bear in the blue raincoat is back with crazy new adventures. After a young bear who can walk and talk sneaks across the sea from the jungles of Peru to the streets of London, he is taken in by the quirky Brown family. Hijinks ensue when Paddington attempts to find the mysterious explorer who taught him all his British-isms. With the fabulous Ben Whishaw stepping into the titular ...

Gone Girl (2014) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 19) 😈

Hello everyone, Today's film showed me something quite profound. I remember when this film came out and I thought a thriller about a missing girlfriend starring Ben Affleck was seriously not for me; was not interested! But it has taken me 6 years to develop a more open mind about genre binaries and I decided to give it a shot. Wowza, I'm glad I did because it was great.... After his wife disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) becomes the focus of an inte...

Lady Macbeth (2016) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 18) ❤

Image
Hello everyone, Today's film is an underrated dark horse. I'd heard people talking about this film, and particularly how good Florence Pugh is in it, around Academy Awards season when Pugh received her nomination for Little Women . I loved her in that 2020 film, and I loved her in this 2016 film as well; and just to clarify this actually had nothing to do with Shakespeare.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB Although the title would suggest a literal Shakespeare retelling, director William Oldroyd weaved in a darker metaphorical connotation with a story of an unhappy married woman and a turbulent love affair. In 19 th Century rural England, young bride Catherine (Florence Pugh) is traded into marriage and discovers hidden truths...

Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 17) 💥

Image
Hello everyone, Today's review is for a fantastic animated film that wasn't initially on my radar because it was yet another Spiderman movie. After Maguire, Garfield and Holland, I really thought this superhero had been played out in Hollywood, what more could they do? Then this little film went and won Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards and I realised I might have missed a gem. I was right, this film is so freaking good, 10/10 would recommend.... Jersey Boys (2014) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 16) 🎤

Image
Hello everyone, Today's review is about one of my favourite musicals of all time and its film treatment at the hands of the great Clint Eastwood. I have plenty of issues with the details, but overall this film is a good time that made me smile and the music is incredible.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB A classic jukebox musical given a sleek Hollywood makeover by the great Clint Eastwood, this upbeat and funky take on the rise and fall of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons had great potential but ultimately veered away from focusing on the iconic music. The journey of four normal guys from the mean streets of New Jersey whose time as The Four Seasons defined a new era of pop music in the 1960's is not a fairytale, and Eastwo...

Begin Again (2013) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 15) 🎹

Hello everyone, Today's review is for a musical film that I initially thought I wouldn't like after I watched the trailer. 2013 Emily was a silly billy, because this one was honestly one of my favourite films I've ever seen. It's truly unassumingly brilliant, 10/10 would recommend.... After a serendipitous meeting between a washed up music producer and a heartbroken English musician, the two strike up an unlikely friendship and endeavour to collaborate on a promising project. It’s humble aesthetic dominated b...

Marie Antoinette (2006) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 14) 🎀

Image
Hey everyone, Today's film is one that completely surprised me. I want to support projects with female directors as much as possible, but I am super glad that a strong woman behind the camera isn't the only reason I bloody loved this one.... (**disclaimer: the following thoughts are 100% my opinion, you do not have to agree with them - film is inherently subjective and everyone's perspective is valid! Also, there are probably spoilers in the following, read at your own risk. Now onto some thoughts....**) Source: IMDB Sofia Coppola tackled one of the most infamous and naïve monarchs to ever wear a crown. An attention-seeking character study of life within the lavish walls of Versailles before the French Revolution, the subtle complexities of Coppola’s perspective lent merit to a historical hot take unlike anything else in this genre. From her betrothal to the future king of France at just 15 years old, to her reign as queen at 19 and the eventual fall of Versailles, a re-im...

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 13) 🎪

Image
Hey everyone, Today's post is all about the first film that kicked off this crazy idea in the first place, and another animated franchise film that I completely missed when it came out. One of the more surprisingly enjoyable watches from the pile, it's a bit of fun that I would recommend for some chuckles.... In order to get back to the bright lights of Central Park Zoo, the Madagascar crew get swept up in a struggling European circus whilst being pursued by crazy animal control. A somewhat unnecessary new chapter, this fun bunch of witty crazi...

Finding Dory (2016) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 12) 🐟

Hey everyone, Completing this weekend's animated double feature is a film I missed when it first came out and had reservations about. Finding Nemo  was one of those classics that defined my childhood and I knew it was a risky move to add a sequel to such a beloved thing. Safe to say, I was worried for nothing because this sequel was actually pretty great.... With patchy memories of her parents and childhood home, blue tang Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) sets off on a hijinks-fuelled quest to find her long-lost family. The hea...

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) review - Movie Thoughts (Chapter 11) 🔮

Image
Hey everyone, I've decided to write through every second weekend while this wacky project is a thing, so for the first weekend double feature I have two of my favourite animated movies from my lockdown movie list. Today's one is an older Disney musical that often slips through the cracks of people's GOAT list for this genre. But it's so great that I would definitely recommend it for everyone as a easy 90 minutes if you want a break from all your productive lockdown shit....
